What are the differences between EC-1 and El Capistan?
EC-1 is a compact, single footswitch digital tape delay pedal, based on the original El Capistan. There are quite a few differences between the two:
- The user interface has been simplified to allow for a smaller footprint, while still building in as much functionality from El Capistan as possible. The SOS looper and onboard spring reverb, as well as the MODE and TAPE HEAD toggle switches are not present in EC-1, and most echo settings are controlled via the front-facing knobs.
- The delay algorithm for EC-1, while similar to El Capistan, is different and will not behave or sound identical to El Capistan.
- EC-1 includes two optional preamp models, ORIGINAL TUBE and MODDED TUBE, which offer the beloved sonic characteristics of an early tape machine’s tube preamp and is applied to both the dry and the EC-1 processed signals.
- EC-1 features Record Level options to boost the signal being written to the virtual tape for saturated repeats.
- In addition to the preamp models, EC-1 also has preamp BOOST controls, which can be used while EC-1 is bypassed. This allows you to use EC-1 as a boost pedal (maximum of +6dB), without any of the delayed effect present.
- Onboard, single switch tap tempo was added in lieu of a second footswitch. EC-1 also supports external MiniSwitch tap tempo control, as well as MIDI clock sync.
- EC-1 features LED brightness control, which is not present in El Capistan.
- EC-1 has stereo signal processing that is different than that of El Capistan. EC-1 uses a direct left -> left and right -> right stereo processing, versus El Capistan, which passes dry stereo input signal directly to the outputs, copies that input signal, sums it, then applies stereo processing to that summed copy, which becomes the wet signal. The processing that we chose with EC-1 allows for a very distinguishable difference between the stereo spread on the two pedals.
